New Notes is the latest album by British keyboard legend, Max Middleton.
Max is best known as the keyboard player for guitar legend, Jeff Beck. Widely seen as the man who put the ‘jazz’ into Beck’s work - contributing to the seminal albums Blow By Blow and Wired - Max has worked with Kate Bush, Dick Morrissey, Chris Rea, Gary Moore, Snowy White, Chapman Whitney, Mick Taylor and many others.
His first recording for over ten years, New Notes sees Max re-visit the music and musicians that have most inspired him over the years, with affectionate references to Erroll Garner and Dave Brubeck as well as Stevie Wonder and Joe Zawinul. Middleton’s long-standing fondness for calypso and reggae – another genre he explored with Jeff Beck - infuses several of the 14 tracks on the album.
With an overall playing time of almost 70 minutes, the new album is principally piano-driven, supported by a cast of excellent session players led by Max’s close friend, guitarist-producer Bob Kidby. The drummer on all tracks is Dave Jackson with guest contributions from bassist Felix Krish and guitarist Nico Ramsden.
